I just came back from a trip to Lappland in northern Sweden and had the best time ever. Being invited to see the Sami collect and organize their reindeer herds was a wonderful and very exiting experience. We left Jokkmokk in the afternoon and I was told it was “only 3000″ reindeer to organize that day so it should take about four or five hour to get the job done. It was absolute magic! The smaller herds was let in to a corral and people from all the families stood by to take their animals to their own closure for vaccine and transport to the winter pasturage.
Being a guest of one of the Sami families I was also shown the traditional way to keep warm during the sometimes extreme cold above the arctic circle. Reindeer fur in both pants and boots seemed like a very very good idea and my goodness how handsome they looked!
